Collision Repair Consumer Rights
- It is your right to choose your preferred collision repair facility. No insurance company can compel you to go to a specified body shop, such as a dealership.
- You have a right to reasonable collision repair labor rates.
- Some insurance companies may ask that you drop by their drive-in claims center prior to having your car repaired. This is not mandatory. You may decide to leave your vehicle at your body shop and request that the insurance company send an appraiser to that facility instead.
- You are not required by law to obtain more than one estimate for your collision repair work.
- It’s not unusual to see differences between body shop collision repair estimates and insurance estimates. Lower estimates may happen when not all of the necessary work or the most updated parts prices are included. In any case, you may inquire about it with the customer service staff at your body shop.
- Your insurance claims must be negotiated on your behalf by your body shop.
- Do not drive your car if it’s unsafe. When in doubt, always check with your body shop.
- Your car is one of your biggest lifetime investments. Preserve its value as well as your safety by leaving its collision repair and maintenance to professional hands.
